This beautiful part of Spain is quite unknown to many
people and probably Spain's Best Kept Secret, with the
beautiful Mar Menor (little sea) a saltwater lagoon
divided from the Mediterranean by the Manga strip, a
natural breakwater which has progressively enclosed it.
Almond trees, palms and windmills add to the beauty of
the landscape of this area.
There are wonderful sailing and water skiing facilities
on the lagoon, without any waves and very shallow
waters, this makes the ideal beach holiday or
permanently living area, especially for families with
children due to it being so safe. The bay is famous for
visitors with rheumatic, arthritic and skin problems, at
one part of the beach there is a natural mud bath and so
it offers therapeutic results in comparison to the Black
Sea.
Enjoying 320 days a year of sunshine and with average
air temperatures of 18-20°C, the Mar Menors' surrounding
areas offer a flat terrain, the majority of which is
given over to agriculture, enabling fresh produce to be
purchased from the local markets. There is a local
street market each day in this area.
Access to this area: The local airports in this area
offer superb service and there are regular daily flights
from major airports in Europe. For Torrevieja and the
Mar Menor, the ideal airport is Murcia (San Javier) with
flights from Madrid, Barcelona, London, Manchester,
Dublin, Düsseldorf and Munich. From this very friendly
and efficient airport, one can reach Torrevieja in 20
minutes and the Mar Menor area (where the airport is
situated) in 5 minutes or towns further afield in 10-15
minutes. The famous "La Manga Club" is only 20 minutes
drive from this airport. Alicante Airport is 40 minutes
from Torrevieja, and 55 minutes from Mar Menor .
